Student Exchange with Jaypee University of Information Technology Exemplifies Strength in Diversity

Six students from the Jaypee University of Information Technology spent the past six months at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology contributing to the NSF funded BuG ReMeDEE research project. These Undergraduate students came to Mines to learn about research methods in the United States and to add to the overall BuG ReMeDEE project (https://www.sdsmt.edu/BuGReMeDEE/).

These students here, worked on a number of projects, including enhancing hydrolytic potential of thermophilic strains to efficiency degrade lignocellulosic, growing biofilms, efforts to increase sugar uptake in bacterium by the use of electroporation, checking enzyme activities under microgravity conditions, new approaches to enhance methane uptake, and making biodegradable plastics from plant material.

This exchange was a part of the Memorandum of Understanding between SD Mines and Jaypee University. This agreement is one of many mutually beneficial partnerships Professor Sani maintains with universities around the world. These sorts of arrangements encourage staff exchange and collaboration, joint research and publications, and student exchange opportunities. The agreements are also tied to the BuG ReMeDEE inclusion statement and the efforts to promote diversity in science and engineering fields.
