Meet the team

My research team uses numerical models to simulate active volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunami genesis for an array of targets worldwide from Aleutian, Icelandic, and South American volcanoes to recent mega-thrust earthquakes and tsunamis in Sumatra and Japan.

Current:

  • Mike Baranowski, MS student Influence of seismic tomography on coseismic slip models of the 2011 M9 Tohoku Earthquake. Sponsored by NSF.
  • Ted Donovan, PhD student Python Scripts for FEM-based nonlinear inversion of InSAR data. Sponsored by NSF.
  • Erika Ronchin, PhD student (co-advised with the University of Barcelona via CSIC Fellowship), Three-dimensional solid modeling techniques for volcano deformation.
  • Dr. Jay Tung, postdoc Poroelastic simulations of InSAR-observed earthquake deformation. Sponsored by NASA ROSES ESI, in collaboration with Dr. Gilles Peltzer-NASA JPL.

Former:

  • Dr. Sarah Compton (PhD 2013) Noble Energy.
  • Haylee Dickinson (MS 2010) Pursuing PhD at Purdue University.
  • Dr. Kristin L. H. Hughes (PhD 2011) ExxonMobile.
  • Jonathan Stone (MS 2011) Pursuing PhD at University of Alabama.
  • Dr. Wei Tao (postdoc, 2009-2010) China Earthquake Administration.

For prospective students

Postdocs and students working on my research team can expect academic flexibility and the freedom to explore, along with my personal attention and committment to excellence. My research team has exclusive use of the Geodynamics Laboratory: A self-contained computing facility specifically designed for intensive finite element modeling and numerical analysis. The elements of a good modeler are:
  • Self-motivation
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Knowledge of geology, geophysics, and mechanics
  • Creativity
  • Effective communication
